Nah, we behaved worse, but only to Irish people, so the privileged English public and press felt free to ignore it. What's new is that now the public (and the press) is "the enemy".

You know that the IRA hung more IRA men than the British did after the Irish War of Independence.

A lot of the really nasty atrocities on both sides in the Civil war where hushed up until relatively recently.
