My personal experience is that I installed Audacity and it was a good application for recording and editing sound.

I installed Ardour and spent a couple of hours trying to get Jack to work or something like that and gave up.

Ardour does not require JACK and has not for many years. Unfortunately the internet is riddled with out-of-date and inaccurate information which makes many people believe that it does.
