I've been in WV for a month, not encountering deers when the night falls is what's surprising. Also, a herd looking at your slow-driving car when the moon is hiding makes for a surreal vision (for some reasons, their eyes are _bright_ in the dark)


Their eyes are so bright because they are retroreflective[1]. Just like road signs, they reflect light back in the direction it came from.

Which we should be thankful for, because otherwise they'd be _very_ hard to see as well, and a lot more people would be dying.
